Dystopian Genre
So, I’ve had a dystopian storyline drifting around in my head for awhile. The main character has always been a young girl – she still is, but I also wanted an older main character for some balance. The idea for YaYa was born from that. Her full name Yaldah Sahiyr means “Daughter Survivor.”
Story Concept:
She is a 50’s something year old woman who has not had an easy life. It’s not been a bad life, just not easy. About two years ago, YaYa got an internal nudge to start prepping for the future.
It all started with buying a bug out bag from Amazon. Then a medical kit. Then books on edible plants in North America. Fire starter kits. Then a four pack Bushcraft box set. I’ll leave the rest up to your imagination.
Two weeks ago, she had filled the last space on the shelf of her storm shelter with freeze dried pork packets that had a shelf life of 25 years. YaYa decided that she was good until she turned 80.
Her neighbors thought she was “the crazy prepper lady.” Heck, she thought she was the crazy prepper lady. But every time she decided that she wasn’t going to buy one more thing, her stomach started somersaulting as nerves began to boil. And she was not a woman prone to anxiety, not after the life she’d lived.
September 21, 2044 was the day of the first attack. It didn’t happen the way the government had warned. Only small towns in remote locations were attacked on that first day. The big cites weren’t hit until six months later. By that the time the mid-west was a barren wasteland and the large cities were overflowing with refugees.
Yaya had woken up at 3:33 am that morning when she could have sworn that she heard the words, “Time to bug out.” It took her exactly twenty-seven minutes to leave her house. She went to the barn to saddle her horse and put the prepped packs on her donkey, cow, and two dogs. Then walked out the door of her barn into the forest at the edge of her property without a single glance backwards.
They attacked YaYa’s hometown at six o’clock that morning. There were no known survivors.
